Four simple tips to reduce your stress about moving

by Fatima Calderon

Moving is an emotional process. It can represent growth and new beginnings (moving for a job promotion, for example), but also it can fill you with uncertainty and anxiety (specially if you're moving to an area -city/country- you've never been to before).

Here are four simple ways to own your fear and lessen the stress:

1. Hire a company if you can afford it. Doing the actual move yourself can be the most economical option (but not always), but if you have kids and/or pets; if you have furniture and/or fragile items; and if you are already jittery about moving in general (hello! new country, new colleagues, new friends, new school for the kids, a million legal things to take care of) then you're better off hiring a company. Don't hire helpers. Hire a professional and reputable company that can do it all or adjust to what you need. They'll take care of the grunt work while you take care of the rest. And most can provide you with free counsel and resources for your new city/neighborhood.

2. Keep an emergency fund for unexpected expenses that could crop up during the move or setting up your new home ("Oh My God we have to buy cleaning supplies because this apartment is a wreck!").

3. Ask questions throughout the process. Even if you're going the DIY route, you can consult with the Internet and find specific guides for your new neighborhood, or to share with the kids, or how to support your spouse, how to leave behind your home/city, how to move with your pets, and so on. So look for your specific questions from your mover, from your relocation manager, Google. The more knowledge you have the better you can understand and be prepared.

4. Pamper yourself. Reduce the physical stress by getting a massage, a relaxing bath, going shopping -whatever you do to treat yourself that will make you FEEL relaxed. Do this as close as possible to the move (not on moving day) so that you can carry the comfort with you a few days and when arriving to your new place, with revived energy to tread ahead.

Know that you will survive this. And whatever the reasons for the move, you can find the silver linings, make the best of it.
