How are we handling the container weight verification requirements?

Implementing the SOLAS container weight verification requirements.

by Fatima Calderon

As most of us in the shipping industry know, the new SOLAS requirement becomes effective from July 1, 2016.

In short, the regulation specifies that the Verified Gross Mass (VGM) of each container is proven and provided to the US Coast Guard and the International Maritime Organization, prior to loading into a vessel.

Unlike Europe and the Mideast, most U.S. ports ARE NOT providing in-terminal weighing services for containers.

Shippers remain responsible for verification, weighing, and providing the VGM.

To comply with the SOLAS weight regulation, GOMOVE USA will provide a certified Weight Certificate for all container shipments, having each container weighed at a certified weighing station*. This will be submitted to the shipping carrier along with other required export documentation.

Rates will still be handled based on volume/weight as up to now. The Weight Certificates will be provided for compliance only.

* This means that the weighing facility meets the accuracy standards and requirements of the state in which is being performed.
