What if something goes wrong during your move?

by Fatima Calderon

We recently asked:
True or False: Things go wrong with any move, and there's nothing you can do about it.

The answer is: both true and false.

"To err is human..." And it's true. No moving company can 100% guarantee that *nothing* will go wrong ever.
Some moves go very smoothly, some others not so much.

From a mover dropping a box and breaking your valuables, to the shipping line unexpectedly filing for bankruptcy and your goods being rerouted and delayed (full disclosure: both situations have happened to us). The reality is that anything can go wrong during any life event.

But, *if* something does go wrong, can you do anything about it? In most situations yes (save for an "act of God" or force majeure). The key is to be prepared for most common situations by being proactive.

Here are some things you can do before and after your move to help you in most unexpected situations:

  • Hire a reputable mover. This is the single most important thing you can do. Do not hire a rogue mover. Make sure (by checking, not just taking their word for it) that they are licensed and insured to handle your local, domestic, or international move - keep in mind that a local/domestic license does not allow them to move you internationally. Check our handy infographic on things to consider when choosing a moving company, here.

  • Insure your valuables. If something ends up breaking or getting lost, you will get some or all of the replacement value back - check our infographic for understanding insurance coverage options here.

For U.S. local and domestic moves, check out the DOT's guide to protecting your move (this is the US) here.

For international moves, check the Federal Maritime Commission's tips to protecting your move and property here.

One final tip is to always follow up any conversation with your moving coordinator in writing, make sure things are written down and keep asking questions if something is not clear to you.

While not everything can be prevented from happening, there are some steps you can take in lowering your risks and mitigating your damages.
